At interview Stage
The fact that you have been invited for interview indicates that the
employer has seen something in your application to believe that you
are suitable for the position. Time is of the essence for these
people, so the potential employer is looking for you to be the
solution to their employment need. It is perfectly natural to be
nervous and apprehensive so pre-preparation is essential.
Prepare: find out as much about the company and position as
possible. Ask for job descriptions, company brochures or even visit
their web site. This gives a positive impression to the client that
you are keen and have taken a real interest in their organisation.
First Impressions: Dress smartly and professionally ensuring you
arrive for the interview in plenty of time. If in doubt do a dummy
run of the journey prior to interview date.
Ensure you have a copy of your CV and other relevant certificates or
licences with you
Project yourself: Be courteous, shake hands firmly don't forget to
smile when appropriate. What the employer is looking for here is
someone who is confident in his or her own ability, looks interested
in what is being said and is responding to what is being said.
Projecting yourself as enthusiastic and positive
Positive Body Language- Hold good eye contact, Sit with good
posture, don't fidget or use monosyllabic yes or no answers.
Practise with either family or friends. Try to anticipate what
questions you feel you may be asked, and more importantly what
answers you can give.
Prepare a list of questions that you may wish to ask. This should
include specific questions in relation to career progression,
training opportunities, targets, and when a final decision is likely
to be made.
Leave a lasting impression- be courteous and confident when you
leave the room thanking the appropriate person's for their time
Remember practise makes perfect.
BE YOURSELF
Application Forms
Some employers may ask applicants to fill out application forms
rather than CV´s primarily because it requires all prospective
candidates to submit the same information in the same format.
A useful exercise here is to prepare for the application form in
exactly the same way as compiling a CV in terms of preparation.
It is also good practise to take a photocopy of the application from
prior to filling it in. This will enable you to prepare content and
layout prior ensuring answers fit in the spaces provided. It also
ensures that you are answering exactly what the question is asking
of you.
Get a friend of family member to check spelling and grammar prior to
completing the application form for real.
Do photocopy the final document as some time may elapse between
sending the application form in and any interview date. This will
ensure that can refer to it prior to any interview and try to guess
what sort of questions may be asked of you.
